If you’re looking for a truly unique cultural experience in Vietnam, don’t miss water puppetry — a traditional Vietnamese art form you won’t find anywhere else in the world. With performances taking place on water, colorful wooden puppets, and live music, water puppetry in Vietnam offers a window into the country’s rich folklore and rural life.
Water puppetry (Múa rối nước) is a centuries-old Vietnamese art form where wooden puppets perform on the surface of water. Controlled by skilled puppeteers standing waist-deep behind a screen, these lively characters act out humorous and meaningful scenes from Vietnamese village life, myths, and legends — all set to traditional music and live narration.

Water puppetry originated in the 11th century in northern Vietnam’s Red River Delta. It began as a form of entertainment for farmers in flooded rice fields after harvest. Over time, it moved from the fields to village ponds, and even into royal courts. Today, this ancient art form is preserved and performed both in rural festivals and urban theaters.
The stage is a shallow pond or water tank called a thủy đình (water pavilion), where puppeteers stand behind a curtain to operate puppets with poles and strings hidden beneath the water.
The puppets themselves are handmade from light wood (often fig wood), painted in vibrant folk colors, and designed to float. Characters include Teu (the witty narrator), farmers, animals, dragons, and mythical figures. Thanks to clever mechanisms, these puppets can walk, dance, fish, and even breathe fire or splash water.

More than just entertainment, Vietnamese water puppetry is a cultural treasure. The performances often feature daily farming activities, heroic tales, or stories about ancient kings and gods. Accompanied by traditional Chèo singing — recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage — and folk instruments like drums, cymbals, and horns, the shows are immersive, expressive, and deeply Vietnamese.

While most people associate water puppetry with Hanoi, you can still enjoy authentic water puppet shows in Ho Chi Minh City at several locations:
